Easter weekend breaks to Prague
Easter is very attractive for city travel, particularly for traveling in Prague. There are a couple of reasons why it is so. Firstly, it is a holiday not only in Czech Republic but also in most of other European countries and people usually don’t work but travel on holidays. Other than that, it is the end of winter - the beginning of spring gives a hope of warmer weather and more comfortable sightseeing tours. Nevertheless, many people are interested in Prague’s Easter markets, traditions and cheerful decorations.
As you can imagine, Prague tends to be very busy around Easter time, the hotel rooms and apartments are booked well in advance. So make sure you plan your trip as soon as possible, otherwise you might have a problem to fit the accommodation in your needs (location, price). Easter in Prague – Easter markets
If coming to Prague to learn about typical Czech Easter traditions, you probably may not be in the right place. Prague residents don’t practice the traditions as much as in smaller towns and villages, although you can enjoy Easter markets like nowhere else.
The markets open up every year 3 weeks before the Easter Sunday and gain a great popularity from locals and tourists as well. Of course, they are open every day of the week. As it is with Christmas markets, the most visited are naturally on the largest central Prague squares: Wenceslas Square and Old Town Square. Both are full of more than 100 stalls decorated with colorful hand-painted Easter eggs, flowers, green tree branches and twigs, symbolizing the upcoming spring. In addition to the large Easter markets on Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square, smaller markets are often held in other locations around the Prague historical center.
Sellers in stands offer not only wonderful decorations for Easter but also the typical souvenirs and gifts hand crafted in Czech Republic, including Czech crystal and glass, jewelery, metal-ware, wooden toys, puppets dressed in regional costumes.
If you get hungry or thirsty from all that shopping, you don’t have to move from the markets. There are plenty of stalls making barbecue sausages and other food typical for Easter and also serving famous Czech beer.
Souvenir shopping, great food and excellent beer are still not everything what Prague Easter markets have to offer. There is a lot of entertaining, too. Czech ladies use to dress in traditional costumes and paint the Easter eggs live on markets. If someone interested they can even make personalized Easter eggs with any sign on it (your name or any other message). On the Old Town Square visitors can also daily (from about 4 pm to 7 pm) enjoy dance groups, folk bands, watching children's choirs and other performances.
