Prague Christmas

If you are going to celebrate the Christmas in Prague, you are surely going to have a great time. Not only the Christmas day itself is wonderful, Prague starts to prepare for Christmas in mid-November, some stores even earlier. From that time the streets are decorated with colorful lights, the beautiful gift shop windows call for customers more than ever, Christmas markets open up and Christmas trees dominate on every larger square. This magical Christmas time in Prague holds till the end of December, until the New Years Eve.

To ensure your accommodation will be as magical as the city, choose one of the Mary’s apartments to stay in. Mary’s has a special discount for accommodation in its apartments (November – 21 December)

Mary's has also prepared a program called Prague accommodation as a gift for those who look for an original Christmas present for their beloved.

Prague Christmas markets

Prague Christmas markets

Christmas markets belong to this time of the year as beer belongs to the Czechs :-). The markets open this year on the days between 20-26 November and are open daily, until 1st January.

The Christmas markets take place on the following locations:

  • Old Town Square – the “main” Christmas market, the largest, the most beautiful and the busiest one. You’ll find here both – visitors and locals – looking for something to buy or just to have a pleasant time with their friends and some mulled wine (the typical, very tasty drink of the season). There is also the impressive Christmas tree that sets beautifully against the dark sky. The massive tree is brought in from Krkonose mountains in the North of the Czech Republic; it is no a small imitation Christmas tree.
  • Wenceslas Square – the second largest Christmas market in Prague located in the downer part of the square. Many visitors and residents are meeting at the same place.
  • Havelska Market – one of the oldest markets in Prague. It works all the year, so it is not exclusively a Christmas market, but on Christmas it has an additional spirit and it’s worth to see.
  • Namesti Republiky – another Christmas market right in the center, close to the Kotva shopping center and next to the Palladium – the biggest and newest shopping center in Prague. The other central markets are within walking distance, just as the Old Town Square and the Wenceslas Square itself.
  • Namesti Miru – a bit outside of the very city center, but still easily accessible by metro or tram. You will find more locals than foreigners here.
  • Holesovice Exhibition Ground – Christmas market outside the city center, but with a lot of entertaining events.

The markets are made up from small wooden huts selling a great variety of Czech souvenirs, handicrafts, traditional Christmas decorations and other gifts as ceramic mugs, wooden toys and puppets, Czech glass, etc. If being hungry or thirsty you don’t have to move from the market, there are also plenty of huts making traditional Czech food or typical drinks: mulled wine (called svarak), honey liquor (medovina) or grog.

Bethlehem manger scene with baby Jesus, Mary, Joseph and the Three Kings just can’t miss on a Christmas market, but there are other entertainments for adults or children as well. For many years there had been the possibility of open ice-skating on the Old Town Square or there was a presentation of ice sculptures or… there is something new every year. One entertainment there is for sure every year - carols sung by local and international choirs what makes the atmosphere even more "Christmasy".
