St. Wenceslas Day
26.09.2013, Maria Jagerova
A prince, a saint, a patron of Czech lands, a martyr and a man of peace. These attributes have followed Wenceslas throughout the centuries and made him the most admired historical figure. His cult is ever-present.
The St. Wenceslas Day is celebrated on September 28th every year in the Czech Republic. This day is also known as Czech Statehood day, it is the national day of the Czech Republic and has been a public holiday since 2000.
The St. Wenceslas´s tradition has played an important role in the Czech history. Every time when the Czech nation is in a stew Czechs pray to St. Wenceslas to help them.
Wenceslas I. (907-935) became the Czech prince after three years of the regent rule of his mother Drahomira. In an attempt to strengthen the unity of the state and to avoid conflicts with the neighboring countries, he founded his reign on further Christianization of the country. Probably in the year 935, he was murdered by his adversaries, led by his brother Boleslav. His body was buried in the St. Vitus rotunda. Today, the remains can be found in the St. Wenceslas Chapel, built by Charles IV.
Wenceslas was canonized as a saint due to his martyr´s death as well as several purported miracles that occurred after his death.
St. Wenceslas festivals belong among popular autumn celebrations. They take place all over the Czech Republic for several days and offer visitors a wide range of cultural and social activities, ranging from theatre and dance performances, markets, folk costume processions throughout cities and concerts. These events are accompanied by classical and folk music and performances aof folklore groups. Special St. Wenceslas menus are being prepared in restaurants at many places.
